The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced plans to begin monthly psychiatric evaluation for all inmates across Nigeria’s correctional facilities from next month.
The first Vice President of the Association, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, made this known during a visit to the Nigerian Correctional Service Headquarters in Abuja. The visit also featured a donation of reusable sanitary pads for all female inmates nationwide. Accompanied by producers of the sanitary pads, he said the initiative is part of a broader effort to promote mental health, restore dignity, and ensure no inmate is left behind in access to care.
In appreciation, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, said the collaboration with the NMA will strengthen health services for both inmates and staff across the country.
With this partnership, rehabilitation is taking a more human face; one where care, education, and reform all work together to give inmates a fair chance at change.
