The operation, conducted on Feb. 6, targeted a group of gunmen who were robbing travellers returning from the Tchibarakatene gold site.
According to reports, the armed men, who were aboard a Toyota pickup V6, had intercepted and dispossessed several travellers of their belongings when they were spotted by a military patrol team.
Upon sighting the security operatives, the bandits opened fire, prompting the troops to retaliate. In the ensuing gunfight, two gunmen were killed on the spot while one was captured.
The troops recovered a vehicle belonging to the attackers, an FM machine gun, an AK-47 assault rifle, and a cache of ammunition.
Meanwhile, a fourth assailant managed to escape during the exchange of fire. However, a coordinated search by the National Guard and the Tchirozerine Gendarmerie led to his arrest.
Security sources said the suspect trekked nearly 25 kilometers before he was intercepted in a nearby village while attempting to reunite with an accomplice, who had planned to exfiltrate him towards Tchirozerine. Both individuals were subsequently taken into custody.
