The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) is currently weighing its political options ahead of the 2027 general elections, including the possibility of remaining independent, forming a coalition with opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar, or entering an alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ladipo Johnson, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, confirmed these strategic considerations in a recent statement, noting that internal discussions are ongoing as the political landscape evolves.
“Well, so far, what I’ll say is this: in the NNPP, we tend to, at least from our own history as the Kwankwasiyya movement, wait till midterm. May 29th will be the midterm for this administration. It will be two years down, and two years to go. That is when we believe that proper politicking will commence,” Johnson explained.
He acknowledged ongoing conversations with various political actors but declined to name specific individuals or groups, emphasizing that the party remains focused on consulting widely before making any public declarations.
“There are basically three cards on the table: either we remain in the NNPP and continue with those who joined us all the way, or we form some sort of coalition with Atiku and others, or we form an alliance with the ruling party. I am not saying any of these is the case now. But these are the three basic options that could happen,” he said.
Johnson also addressed media reports suggesting that the NNPP’s presidential candidate in 2023, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, was on the verge of joining the APC. He dismissed such reports as politically motivated speculations.
