The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has confirmed that all corps members are fully covered by a comprehensive insurance package throughout their service year, including life and medical insurance. He made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja during a visit by Jibrin Ndace, Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON).
Highlighting the scheme’s effectiveness, Nafiu cited past interventions, such as the payment of ₦28 million to save a pregnant corps member and her unborn child after a spinal injury, and ₦33 million for prosthetic arms for another member involved in a road accident. He noted that coverage begins from the moment call-up letters are issued, even before corps members leave their homes.
Nafiu also urged journalists to verify reports with the NYSC to avoid the spread of misinformation. He stressed that corps postings are designed to meet national needs while ensuring safety and that the scheme remains apolitical and non-religious, promoting national unity.
During the visit, Nafiu commended Ndace for his leadership at VON, and Ndace praised Nafiu’s modern leadership style. VON reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with NYSC on youth-focused programming and promoting the initiatives of corps members to a global audience.
