An NYSC member serving in Akure, Ondo State, Ibrahim Mariam Titilayo, has shared her harrowing experience after she was wrongfully arrested and detained by police officers from Abuja over a phone number allegedly linked to a kidnapping and murder case.

According to her account, the incident began on 16th October 2025, when officers attached to the Force Intelligence Department (FID), Abuja, arrested her in Akure and took her to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID). Her phones — an iPhone 12 Pro Max, an Itel device, and her WiFi router — were seized.

The officers, led by Inspector Dauda Adamu, confronted her with a list of mobile numbers tied to a criminal investigation dating back to January 2024, alleging that one of the lines was registered with her NIN.

However, Airtel’s official records later confirmed that the SIM in question was purchased and activated on 15th April 2025, long after the crime occurred. Despite this evidence, the officers insisted on taking her devices to Abuja and ordered her to report there in person.

Her lawyer, Barr. Tope Temokun, immediately took up the case pro bono, writing petitions to the Inspector General of Police and Airtel Headquarters. On her arrival in Abuja, she was joined by Barr. Michael Effiwatt of Tope Temokun Chambers. Yet, her devices were still withheld pending “IG approval”, leaving her stranded in the city for days without accommodation.

The turning point came when human rights activist Mr. Omoyele Sowore arrived at the FID Headquarters after being alerted to her plight. His intervention led to the immediate release of her seized phones and brought the case to an end.

In her appreciation message, Ibrahim expressed profound gratitude:

“I thank Mr. Omoyele Sowore, whose timely presence ended my ordeal. I also deeply appreciate Barrister Tope Temokun and the entire team at Tope Temokun Chambers — Barr. Iretimide Osunyikanmi in Akure, Barr. Michael Effiwatt in Abuja, and Miss Monica Ayuba, the Abuja administrative secretary. God bless you all abundantly.”

Ibrahim has since returned to Akure and says she is grateful to be free again after the traumatic experience.
