Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has launched a scathing attack on former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, insisting that the ex-governor should be standing trial for genocide and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC) rather than delivering lectures in Nigeria.
Omokri’s comments came in response to El-Rufai’s presence in Imo State, where he was billed to deliver the Odenigbo Lecture.
The development sparked protests from some residents, a move Omokri praised as “spontaneous resistance” against what he described as El-Rufai’s “bloody legacy.”
“Nasir El-Rufai, an unrepentant fiend, boasted on Channels Television of the 2015 Zaria massacre, where under his watch as governor of Kaduna State, hundreds of Shiite Muslims, including women and children, were slaughtered,” Omokri alleged, citing Amnesty International’s report that the death toll could be close to 1,000 victims.
He further accused El-Rufai of complicity in the Southern Kaduna killings, which he likened to “the Darfur of Nigeria,” alleging mass killings of Christians.
Omokri also referenced a 2012 social media post in which El-Rufai reportedly warned of revenge attacks on Christians, as well as his controversial 2019 warning to foreign election observers, where El-Rufai had said: “They will go back in body bags.”
“Instead of gallivanting from church to church in Imo, El-Rufai should be facing charges at The Hague,” Omokri stated. He criticized Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for associating with the former governor, describing it as a “desperate move” to gain political ground ahead of 2027.
The former aide concluded by commending Imo residents for rejecting El-Rufai, whom he likened to Sudan’s ousted strongman, Omar al-Bashir.
As of press time, neither El-Rufai nor Obi had issued a response to Omokri’s claims.
