The exercise of the Governor’s constitutional prerogative of mercy, carried out on Monday, is a continuation of his administration’s commitment to humane governance, restorative justice and prison decongestion.
The latest pardon builds on the landmark clemency granted on January 1, 2026, when the Governor approved mercy for 77 convicts during the New Year celebrations, following recommendations by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the seven beneficiaries were selected after careful consideration of verified reports indicating genuine remorse, good conduct in custody, commitment to rehabilitation and strong prospects for reintegration into society.
The outright release of the convicts, the statement noted, reflects Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief that the justice system should balance punishment with compassion, while offering second chances to individuals who have demonstrated meaningful personal reform.
Chairman of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, commended the Governor for what he described as a thoughtful and forward-looking decision.
Ajulo said the gesture reaffirms the administration’s resolve to reform the justice sector, reduce congestion in correctional centres and promote a society where redemption and reintegration remain possible for reformed offenders.+See more details
