One Body Found, Nine People Rescued In Tudun Lona, Sokoto State Canoe Incident

Nine passengers have been rescued and a body of a 29-year-old man was recovered while an 80-year-old woman is still missing in a Thursday boat disaster
at Tudun Lona Jaranja River in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto state.
The Thursday boat disaster marked the third in two weeks in the state. It was reported that the canoe was conveying eleven passengers before it capsized.

Officials of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) alongside community volunteers, are coordinating efforts to recover the missing victim as search and rescue operations continue.

This third canoe mishap within two weeks in Sokoto has sparked concern over safety of riverine transportation and the urgent need for enforcement of regulation and preventive measures.

Authorities have assured that investigations are ongoing and communities advised to adhere to safety guidelines particularly the use of life jackets and overloading to avert further loss of lives on the waterways.
