Political tension is building in Osun East Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections following a sharp rebuttal by allies of Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi against comments credited to All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant Thomas Ogungbangbe.
At a recent APC women leaders’ rally held in Ijebu-Jesa, Ogungbangbe reportedly described himself as the “incoming senator,” declaring in Yoruba that Senator Fadahunsi had effectively handed over political leadership to him. The statement quickly generated reactions within the district’s political circles, prompting an immediate response from the senator’s media team.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, Omole Oluwasegun Omo-Osodi, Head of Media and Public Enlightenment to Senator Fadahunsi, dismissed the claim as false and misleading. The statement maintained that there had been no meeting, agreement or discussion between the senator and Ogungbangbe regarding any succession arrangement or endorsement of political ambition.
“The claim is careless and entirely unfounded. There has never been a time our principal called or met Mr. Thomas Ogungbangbe to discuss his ambition,” the statement read, warning against what it described as attempts to gain political relevance through association with the senator.
Fadahunsi, had earlier declared his intention in July 2025 to seek re-election to the Senate, signalling continuity of his political engagement in Osun East. His camp insisted that he remains fully committed to retaining the seat and urged Ogungbangbe to publicly retract the statement and desist from using the senator’s name for political advantage.
The statement also commended APC women leaders in the district, led by Chief Mrs. Bunmi Aluko, for organising what it described as a successful mobilisation rally, while reaffirming support for the party’s “AMBO/Kayode project” aimed at securing electoral victories in the forthcoming August 15 polls.
Reiterating confidence in the senator’s political standing, the media office concluded that Fadahunsi would, “by God’s grace,” return to the National Assembly to continue representing Osun East Senatorial District.
