The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has reaffirmed its unwavering confidence in the leadership of Ambassador Iliya Damagum and the National Working Committee (NWC), while unveiling a high-powered reconciliation committee to restore unity ahead of the party’s elective national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its emergency meeting held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, and presented by Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, the BoT described the Damagum-led leadership as “formidable, united, and focused,” urging all stakeholders to rally behind the NWC in preparation for a peaceful and successful convention.
BoT Commends Damagum-Led NWC and Party Organs
The PDP BoT, in its resolution, commended the Amb. Iliya Damagum-led National Working Committee, the PDP Governors Forum, and the National Convention Organizing Committee for their collective efforts in stabilizing the party amid internal tensions.
According to the communiqué, the BoT’s position reinforces confidence in the NWC’s ability to lead the party through its upcoming national convention and into future electoral contests with renewed vigor and discipline.
“The BoT reaffirms that the PDP remains a united, formidable, and focused political party under the leadership of Amb. Iliya Damagum,” the statement read. “The Board solidly stands with the NWC and all organs of the party for their stabilizing roles as we progress toward the Ibadan convention.”
BoT Welcomes Oyo Court Ruling
The BoT also hailed the ruling of the Oyo State High Court, delivered by Justice A.L. Akintola, which affirmed the PDP’s constitutional right to manage its internal affairs, including the conduct of its national convention without external interference.
Describing the ruling as a “victory for democracy and the rule of law,” the BoT said the judgment underscored the judiciary’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and political development.
Addressing Internal Tensions
However, the Board of Trustees expressed concern over the “recent developments within the party,” including the invasion of the PDP National Secretariat and other incidents that have caused tension among members.
“The BoT notes with concern the misunderstandings and regrettable incidents that have played out in public. These are not reflective of the ideals and character of the PDP,” the communiqué stated.
It emphasized that, as the “conscience of the party,” the BoT would not take sides but would instead focus on safeguarding the PDP’s integrity and promoting dialogue over discord.
“The decision for reconciliation is not a sign of weakness,” the BoT declared, “but a demonstration of maturity and responsibility.”
BoT Sets Up Reconciliation Committee
To resolve the internal rifts, the BoT announced the establishment of a Reconciliation Committee composed of prominent party elders and stakeholders drawn from all six geopolitical zones.
The committee members are:
- Amb. Hassan Adamu (North East) – Chairman
- Chief Mike Oghiadomhe (South South) – Secretary
- Chief Ugochukwu Okeke (South East)
- Senator Zaynab Kure (North Central)
- Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola (South West)
- Dr. Lubna Mohammed Gusau (North West)
The BoT mandated the committee to reconcile all conflicting factions and submit a comprehensive report by Tuesday, November 11, 2025, ahead of further action before the national convention.
Commitment to Unity and Progress
The communiqué concluded with an appeal for unity and discipline within the party’s ranks as it prepares for the Ibadan convention.
“The PDP BoT remains committed to peace, reconciliation, and internal democracy,” the statement affirmed. “We call on all members to prioritize the collective interest of the party and work together for a stronger, united PDP capable of providing credible leadership for Nigeria.”
