The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the recent derecognition of the David Mark-led faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that the move threatens Nigeria’s democratic stability.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP described the derecognition as part of a broader pattern of “orchestrations and manipulations against opposition political parties” that is driving the nation’s political temperature to “near-fever levels.”read full, details. .
“The ruling APC intends to win the next presidential elections at all costs, by hook or crook. To achieve this, no boundary is respected, and nothing is too much to sacrifice—including derailing democracy, truncating the republic, and destroying Nigeria,” the statement read.
The PDP expressed concern that national institutions, including INEC, the judiciary, and even the clergy, are being used to advance partisan agendas, warning that INEC’s default interpretations of legal matters involving political parties appear consistently to favor the incumbent government.
“The timing of recent INEC political party monitoring activities raises legitimate concerns, with rumors suggesting potential de-registration of opposition parties—a development that would further injure our democracy,” the party added.
The PDP called on INEC and all national institutions to resist partisan pressures, placing the country’s democratic interests above political loyalties. “We must adopt a ‘country-first’ disposition that transcends partisan cleavages. This is a critical moment in our democratic journey,” the statement emphasized.
