Fresh indications have emerged that the battle for the soul of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is shifting to the states following the controversial national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, over the weekend.

Party insiders who spoke with Daily Sun disclosed that loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, are already mobilising for a counter-offensive as the struggle for control of the opposition party intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections.

LeadNaija News recalls that the convention, presided over by the immediate past acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, announced the expulsion of Wike, former Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose, national secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and Dan Orbih, among others.

In a sweeping move, the State Working Committees in Abia, Imo, Akwa Ibom and Cross River were also dissolved.

The event was attended by Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), along with other party leaders.

However, Governors Fintiri and Mutfwang have publicly distanced themselves from the expulsion exercise.

The removal of the FCT minister and his allies is seen as the latest escalation in the lingering power tussle between Wike and the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

The feud has polarised various organs of the party, leaving the PDP fractured at a time it is attempting to reposition ahead of the next election cycle.

Sources close to the Wike political camp told Daily Sun that loyalists of the minister have begun wide consultations on their next steps.

According to one insider, Wike’s supporters will converge in Abuja during the week to “evaluate the situation extensively” and map out a response to the convention’s decisions.

The source added that a counter-offensive is expected once the group reaches a final position on the expulsion and the dissolution of key state structures.
