A civic movement known as the Progressive Forces of South Africa has launched a national petition calling on the government to take urgent action to address growing tensions between local citizens and foreign nationals.
The group, which picketed outside the Nigerian Embassy in Pretoria on 31 March 2026, is now directing its appeal to the Minister of Home Affairs, the President, and the National Assembly.
It warns that failure to intervene could lead to a repeat of the violent unrest that erupted in Alexandra in May 2008, which resulted in dozens of deaths, widespread displacement, and significant damage to communities.
“South Africa cannot afford to ignore the warning signs,” the organisation stated. “The current climate reflects deepening frustration and unrest among many citizens.”
The petition urges the government to facilitate dialogue between affected communities, implement lawful measures to tackle the root causes of the tensions including immigration compliance and enforcement and prioritise public safety and social cohesion.
Recent protests, including those in Durban and the Eastern Cape linked to the reported installation of a Nigerian national as a traditional leader, have heightened concerns.Get The Full, Details.
The Progressive Forces of South Africa has called on all South Africans to sign the petition, emphasising that collective civic engagement is essential for accountability and long-term stability.
