Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has directed security agencies to intensify operations and apprehend those responsible for Sunday’s deadly attack on Ratatis community in Dorowa Babuje, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, which claimed at least seven lives.

The governor gave the directive in a statement issued on Tuesday in Jos by the Commissioner for Information, Mrs Joyce Ramnap.

Mutfwang condemned the killings, describing them as “barbaric and senseless,” and a setback to the relative peace recorded through sustained dialogue, reconciliation and community engagement across the state.

“The Plateau State Government has received with deep shock and profound sadness reports of a violent attack on Ratatis (Dorowa Babuje) in Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area, which occurred on Sunday, 22nd February 2026, resulting in the tragic loss of innocent lives,” the statement read.

The governor said those injured in the attack were receiving treatment at nearby health facilities, adding that government was closely monitoring their condition to ensure adequate care.

He further disclosed that a joint search and rescue team comprising security operatives and relevant government officials had been constituted to assist victims, account for missing persons and stabilise the affected community.

Mutfwang expressed condolences to families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. He also directed security agencies to strengthen their presence in the affected and surrounding communities to forestall further breaches.

“Residents are urged to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, while cooperating fully with security agencies by providing credible information that may assist ongoing investigations.

“The Plateau State Government reassures all citizens of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout the state. Additional proactive measures are being reinforced to prevent further security breaches and to sustain peace, stability and harmony across Plateau State,” the statement added.

However, the governor’s statement did not make reference to reports of Fulani persons allegedly killed in separate incidents, nor the four persons reportedly attacked and killed in the aftermath of protests by some locals who allegedly targeted commuters.

The omission has drawn concerns from some stakeholders who insist that all victims of the recent violence, irrespective of ethnic background, deserve acknowledgment and justice.

Meanwhile, tension gripped parts of Jos metropolis on Tuesday morning as many shops and businesses remained closed following fear of civil unrest, as security forces assured them of total commitment to sustained peace.

Security presence was heightened in strategic locations across the metropolis as authorities sought to prevent further escalation.
