Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Border Patrol Unit have successfully intercepted and recovered more than one hundred jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, in a major crackdown on cross-border smuggling.
In a statement by the Force, the operation took place while officers were on stop-and-search duty along the Illela–Sokoto Highway.
The operatives intercepted a vehicle loaded with eighty jerrycans of PMS and arrested the driver. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was attempting to smuggle the products across the border into Niger Republic.
In a separate operation in Katsina State, thirty-five jerrycans of PMS (25 litres each) were recovered after being abandoned by suspects who fled upon sighting the operatives. Police authorities confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
