The Nigeria Police Force has announced the resumption of full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide, effective January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns and the increasing use of unauthorised tinted vehicles in criminal activities.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police clarified that there was no court order restraining the Force from enforcing the law on tinted glass usage on vehicles.
According to the statement, enforcement was earlier suspended in the interest of public convenience, transparency, and to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation without undue pressure.
However, the Police said recent security assessments revealed a disturbing increase in crimes facilitated by vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.
The statement read in part:
“Recent trends reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Criminal elements have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent offences.”+See more details
The Force explained that the decision to resume enforcement is a proactive step aimed at enhancing public safety and curbing criminal activities across the country.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the enforcement would be carried out professionally and in strict compliance with the law, with full respect for citizens’ rights.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to promoting public safety and upholding the rule of law while working collaboratively with all stakeholders to keep Nigeria secure,” the IGP said.
Motorists requiring tinted glass permits were advised to apply through approved channels and ensure full compliance before the enforcement date.
The Police reiterated that the renewed enforcement is a security-driven measure and urged the public to cooperate in the collective effort to maintain law and order across the country.
