Preliminary findings into the crash of Air India Flight AI-171 indicate that both engine fuel control switches were moved from RUN to CUTOFF seconds after takeoff, shutting down fuel supply to the aircraft’s engines.
According to reports citing early investigative findings, the switches were moved sequentially about one second apart, approximately 32 seconds after liftoff. This action reportedly starved both engines of fuel, leading to a rapid loss of thrust.
Investigators are said to have found no evidence of mechanical failure in the aircraft. Roughly 10 seconds after the cutoff, the switches were reportedly moved back to RUN, triggering an automatic engine restart attempt.
However, the aircraft was already too low to regain sufficient altitude.
Cockpit voice recordings allegedly captured one pilot asking, “Why did you cut off?” with the other responding, “I did not do so.”
The report referenced is described as preliminary, meaning investigations are still ongoing and final conclusions have yet to be issued by the relevant aviation authorities.
Further official updates are expected as investigators continue to analyze flight data and cockpit recordings.
