Liverpool got off to an eventful start as defending Premier League champions.
In the Premier League curtain raiser against AFC Bournemouth, Liverpool raced into a 2-0 lead.
This was thanks to goals from new boy Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo.
A double from Antoine Semenyo meant that with ten minutes remaining of normal time, Liverpool were in danger of already dropping points.
Drawing at home to Bournemouth would have been an underwhelming start to a campaign, given that it took them until October 27th to draw a game last season.
Furthermore, they only dropped points against four teams who didn’t qualify for European football.
However, Federico Chiesa stepped up to the mark off the bench, with an 88th minute winner to send the home crowd on an emotional evening for the club.
Mohammed Salah put the game beyond all reasonable doubt in the 94th minute but Liverpool had a lot to thank Chiesa for.
Chiesa signed for Liverpool in August 2024, arriving from Juventus for a fee or £10 million.
However, he had a grand total of 406 minutes played in all competitions, 104 of these coming in the Premier League.
Chiesa’s first league start came after they had already confirmed their status as champions for the season.
Despite this, earned the required amount of games played to win a Premier League winners medal.
He became just the second Italian player to earn a Premier League winners medal, after ex Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli, who won it in 2012 with Manchester City.
His future has been long discussed this summer, with a move back to Serie A touted by many.
Arne Slot speaks on Federico Chiesa Liverpool future after game winner
Speaking after the game, Slot spoke on Chiesa’s future at the club.
“When we needed him, he delivered. And that is always positive for your future at a club”.
This will put the fanbase at ease, a collective who have come up with perhaps the best chant at the club.
With a winning goal at Anfield, this could be the moment that catapults Chiesa’s Liverpool career.
