In a show of equity and national appreciation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred identical honours and rewards on Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, matching the package earlier given to the Super Falcons.
According to presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, who made the announcement via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, each member of the D’Tigress team and their technical crew will receive:
- $100,000 for each player
- $50,000 for each coach and technical crew member
- A plot of land each
- The national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON)
This announcement comes just days after a similar gesture was made to the Super Falcons following their exceptional performances on the international stage.
“There is no room for discrimination in our national honours. Excellence deserves equal celebration, and President Tinubu has shown that by rewarding D’Tigress just as he did the Super Falcons,” Onanuga stated in his post.
President Tinubu’s gesture underscores a growing commitment to gender equality in sports recognition and national rewards, sending a clear message that female athletes representing Nigeria at the highest levels will receive equal appreciation for their efforts and achievements.
D’Tigress, who recently clinched a major continental victory, were hailed by the president for not only making history but also inspiring millions of Nigerian youths.
