Putin opens National Unity Day ceremony — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday led the nation in commemorating National Unity Day, a public holiday dedicated to celebrating patriotism, national solidarity, and the enduring spirit of the Russian people.
The ceremony took place inside the Kremlin and began with President Putin laying flowers at the monument to Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky on Red Square in Moscow. The two historical figures are revered for leading the 1612 popular uprising that expelled Polish–Lithuanian forces from Moscow — an event that ended the Time of Troubles and restored Russia’s sovereignty.
Representatives of various religious denominations, public organizations, and youth movements attended the ceremony, underscoring the message of unity and shared purpose that defines the day.
Speaking at the event, President Putin emphasized that National Unity Day was not merely a date on the calendar but a reminder of the collective strength and courage that have sustained the Russian nation through centuries of challenges.
“This holiday was established in memory of the feat of our people more than four centuries ago, who rose to defend the independence of the Motherland,” Putin said. “It was precisely their great unity, their sense of responsibility and duty to the Fatherland, that made it possible to strengthen the foundations of the state and defend the sacred right to hold on to our own roots and moral pillars.”
The Russian leader called on citizens to uphold these same values today, noting that unity, mutual respect, and moral resilience remain vital to the country’s stability and progress.
“It is our shared historical experience and cultural identity that bind us together,” Putin added. “We must continue to protect these moral and spiritual pillars that make Russia strong, sovereign, and united.”
National Unity Day (День народного единства) is celebrated annually on November 4th. The holiday was officially reintroduced in 2005 to replace the former Soviet-era Revolution Day and has since been positioned as a national celebration of patriotism and cohesion.
The day commemorates the 1612 victory of Russian volunteer militias, led by Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, who successfully liberated Moscow from foreign occupation. Their triumph marked a turning point in Russian history, leading to the establishment of the Romanov dynasty and centuries of restored national governance.
Throughout the country, cities and regions also hosted parades, cultural exhibitions, and interfaith gatherings in observance of the holiday. In Moscow, thousands gathered in public squares waving Russian flags and banners bearing messages of peace, unity, and resilience.
