Questions have surfaced over the former Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi’s trip to London, England, which took place in 2022.
It has emerged that Mashazi’s luxury trip cost R3.5 million.
According to an investigation by News24, the expenses included a private jet, luxury accommodation, and high-end outings.
The investigation showed that Mashazi travelled with her husband and two others.
The private jet alone reportedly cost around R2.5 million, with additional expenses for fuel, crew, catering, and airport fees.
Mashazi and her entourage reportedly stayed at the Corinthia Hotel, where rooms range from R15,000 to R95,000 per night.
The jet they travelled on cost R2.5 million. Additional costs included R113,000 for fuel, R25,000 for sustaining the cabin crew, R80,000 for the crew, R17,000 for catering, R40,000 for passenger tax, and R45,000 for parking fees.
The group stayed at the Corinthia Hotel in London, where rooms can cost tens of thousands of rands per night.
These details have sparked strong reactions because the total cost of the trip exceeded Mashazi’s annual salary at the time, which was about R3.1 million.
Mashazi has firmly denied that public money was used.
She insisted the trip was a private social engagement and said the people who paid for it had no business ties with the City of Ekurhuleni.
Mashazi said she feels targeted and unfairly portrayed, describing the coverage as an attempt to damage her reputation.
Despite her explanation, the public conversation has continued, partly because she had already been under scrutiny for her leadership at the municipality and her appearance before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
