Another tragic crash has rocked the R553 near Vanderbijlpark, the same road still haunted by a deadly accident that claimed 14 schoolchildren earlier this year.
On Monday morning, a head-on collision between an Albany truck and a motor vehicle left one person dead and several others injured.
The crash happened in the early hours, forcing the closure of the Golden Highway (R553) as emergency services and SAPS forensic teams rushed to the scene.
According to initial reports, the motor vehicle veered into oncoming traffic, leading to the devastating impact.
Witnesses told police that the driver of the motor vehicle was travelling in the wrong lane when the truck approached.
Despite efforts by the truck driver to avoid the collision, it was too late.
Both vehicles crashed and rolled on impact.
Speaking to MDN News, Vanderbijlpark SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Sincu confirmed the details.
“The motor vehicle from Sebokeng, driven by an African male, was travelling towards Bophelong and moved into the oncoming lane. The truck tried to avoid the collision, but unfortunately both vehicles crashed and rolled,” he said.
The driver of the motor vehicle died at the scene.
The truck driver sustained critical injuries and was rushed to hospital.
Two additional passengers in the truck suffered minor injuries.
Police have opened a case of culpable homicide and investigations are ongoing.
Authorities are also working to locate the family of the deceased.
This latest crash comes just months after a devastating accident on 19 January 2026, when 14 learners lost their lives in a collision involving a truck and a minibus taxi on the same route.
The repeated loss of life on the R553 has raised serious concerns about road safety and driver behaviour along this busy stretch.
