The Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Chijioke Ihunwo, has raised concerns over the recent political drama involving 27 lawmakers.
According to Ihunwo, the lawmakers, who earlier announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on national television, have now reversed their stance, denying the move and withdrawing related cases from court… CONTINUE.. YOUR.. READING..
Ihunwo expressed frustration over the contradictory actions of the lawmakers, which he described as a deliberate attempt to manipulate public opinion.
He criticised their decision to first go public with their defection only to retract it, suggesting that such actions undermine the credibility of both the individuals involved and the democratic process.
The Obio-Akpor chairman also took issue with the judiciary’s role in the unfolding drama.
He pointed to conflicting court rulings on the matter, questioning the integrity of the decisions.
Ihunwo hinted that such discrepancies could be a result of undue influence or compromise within the judiciary, which, he emphasised, must remain impartial to protect the rule of law.
Ihunwo said, “You are aware that there have been many conflicting judgements from different courts across Nigeria. We can’t ignore the role of the judiciary in these cases. It’s very simple: 27 lawmakers left their party publicly; it was on national television for all to see.
“These same individuals later claimed they hadn’t defected. They even withdrew their cases from court through the back door.
“Now, they appear again on national television, claiming they’ve left the party. And there are conflicting court judgements around this. Now, the Central Bank is being told not to fund the Rivers state government. This isn’t fair, and no fair-minded court would make such a judgement unless there’s been some compromise.
“This will only make the civil servants, the pensioners, and the ordinary workers suffer because of one man’s interests.”
