The association of some governors under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has gotten the attention of Atiku Abubakar’s camp.
Atiku is the presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2019 and 2023 general elections.
According to an aide to Atiku, Demola Olarewaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media and Strategy to the former vice president, these governors are the root of the ongoing problems in the party.
In a post on his X handle, Olarewaju took a dig at the governors, saying any of them associating with Wike is a traitor to the PDP.
“Wike’s entire relevance in Nigeria’s political space is directly dependent on his ability to rock PDP’s boat and make it less formidable,” he wrote.
“Any governor associating with him is a traitor in PDP and I’ll even go further and say: Governors are the root of PDP crises since 2015.
“You can trace every major crisis in PDP to the ‘zoning’ of NWC offices to individual governors ever since the party lost Aso Rock and some of us saw it coming in 2015.
“The current tensions may or may not abate and nationalists must be tactically flexible about party platforms. Wike….”
PDP governors are currently divided as a result of the leadership of the party’s structure in Rivers State where Siminalayi Fubara is the current governor.
It is understood that some PDP governors are behind Wike while others are supporting Fubara.
