One alleged hijacker was shot dead this morning, Friday following an attempted truck hijacking on the N3 northbound near Heidelberg.
According to preliminary information, a truck driver was confronted by four suspects who allegedly posed as hitchhikers along the route.
During the encounter, one of the suspects reportedly pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the driver.
The driver then drew his legally owned firearm and opened fire.
One suspect was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services. It is believed another suspect was also injured, while the remaining three fled on foot.
The incident occurred near the Heidelberg Mall bridge. Police and community safety teams have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who are believed to have fled towards the Spaarwater, Overkruin and Bergendal areas.
The South African Police Service confirmed that a case has been opened and that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
