A deadly drive-by shooting on Saturday night has left six people dead and three others injured in Reiger Park, east of Johannesburg.
Police have launched an intensive manhunt for the suspects as investigations continue into what authorities have described as a “brutal and senseless attack.”
According to police spokesperson Constable Johannes Msimanga, officers are pursuing several leads but have not yet established a motive. “We cannot fight crime alone,” he said, urging residents to come forward with any information that could assist in tracking down the perpetrators.
The incident adds to concerns over violent crime in Reiger Park, an area that has long struggled with high levels of criminal activity, including drug trafficking and illegal liquor trading.
Under the leadership of Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Bongani Dube, police have recently intensified operations targeting these issues, but Saturday’s shooting underscores the ongoing challenges.
Nationally, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has reported a 12.4% decline in murders during the first quarter of 2025 compared to last year, yet South Africa continues to record an average of 64 murders a day.
Experts say drive-by shootings are often linked to gang rivalries or drug-related disputes, with attackers using vehicles for both mobility and escape.
As the community mourns, police have appealed for calm and cooperation. “This community deserves peace,” Msimanga said. “We will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice.”
