The Labour Party (LP) has asked President Bola Tinubu to rejig the nation’s security infrastructure in response to the growing rate of insecurity.

In a statement issued by Tony Akeni, the party’s interim national publicity secretary, the LP described the August 19 attack at a mosque in Unguwar Mantau village, Malumfashi LGA of Katsina, as “one too many”.

Akeni said despite huge sums of money allocated to security since 2016 by successive All Progressives Congress (APC) administrations, terrorists continue to operate freely, particularly in Katsina, Plateau and Benue, “without the soulless perpetrators being brought to book and their menace exterminated.”

The party noted that the Muhammadu Buhari-led government budgeted over $9.9 billion for security between 2016 and 2022, while the Tinubu administration has also earmarked huge funds for security in 2024.

It added that though Nigeria is not officially at war, it has recorded more deaths than Ukraine, which has been under attack by Russia since 2022.

The LP urged Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser (NSA), to save the nation from “daily bloodbath”, stressing that the world now demands counter-insurgency strategies, crisis prevention, containment and management.

It said if the NSA cannot live up to his duty, he should be sacked and the entire security architecture reorganised.
