SECURITY ALERT: LeadNaija Uncovers Rise in Data-Theft via Malicious Charging Cables at Phone Repair Shops

A growing cybersecurity threat involving modified phone charging cables capable of stealing sensitive user data has been uncovered in Lagos, sparking widespread concern across Nigeria.

LeadNaija Reports has learned that certain phone technicians are now allegedly using NSA-grade OMG cables—malicious tools disguised as ordinary USB charging cables—to access and extract personal information from customers’ devices under the guise of routine repairs.

According to a Lagos-based eyewitness who spoke with LeadNaija under condition of anonymity, a technician was recently apprehended with one of these cables, confirming that the threat is no longer theoretical.

It looks like an ordinary cable, but it’s actually a hacking device. A repairman was caught with it yesterday. People need to be very careful,” the source said.

What Are OMG Cables?

The OMG cable (Offensive Malware Gear) is a stealth data-theft tool that can remotely collect a wide range of sensitive information including:

  • Phone unlock and app lock codes
  • One-Time Passwords (OTPs)
  • Contacts, call history, and SMS
  • Banking details and BVN
  • Stored login credentials for apps and social media

These cables are embedded with microchips and Wi-Fi modules that allow hackers to access connected phones without the owner’s knowledge.

Urgent Warning to Nigerians

As this threat appears to be spreading beyond Lagos, LeadNaija urges all Nigerians to take precautionary steps, especially when submitting their phones for repairs:

  • Always use personal charging cables when visiting phone repair centers
  • Avoid public charging stations in untrusted environments
  • Do not leave devices unlocked or unattended
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on banking and social media apps
  • Educate family members—especially the elderly—on this emerging threat

Cybersecurity professionals warn that these malicious tools may soon become widespread if not swiftly contained. Law enforcement agencies are advised to investigate and clamp down on vendors and technicians deploying OMG cables.
