A multi-agency police operation has foiled a planned ATM bombing in the Klerksdorp CBD, leading to the arrest of seven suspects on Tuesday morning.
The suspects, aged between 30 and 58, were intercepted before they could execute the attack in the busy commercial hub.

The arrests were the result of a joint operation involving the SAPS Special Task Force (STF), the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS), and other law enforcement units, acting on intelligence received by the Hawks.
According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, the swift action prevented what could have resulted in significant damage and financial loss.
During the operation, officers recovered a rifle, a pistol, and a quantity of explosives believed to be intended for the bombing.

The seven men are expected to face a range of charges, including the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, conspiracy to commit a crime, and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. They are due to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court in the coming days.
ATM bombings remain a persistent challenge in parts of South Africa, with criminal syndicates frequently using explosives to access cash inside machines.
These attacks often result in extensive property damage and heightened fear within communities.
Tuesday’s successful intervention highlights the ongoing efforts of specialised police units to combat serious and violent crime in the region.
