A seven-year moratorium has been approved by the Federal Government on the establishment of new federal tertiary educational institutions across Nigeria.
The decision was reached during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu. The suspension applies to all categories of federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, explained that the move was necessary to address the degradation of infrastructure and manpower in existing institutions, warning that unchecked expansion would lead to a decline in the quality of education and erode the global respect enjoyed by Nigerian graduates.
According to him, Nigeria’s education challenge is no longer about access but about sustaining quality, noting that the duplication of institutions has overstretched resources and weakened operational capacity.
