Look for dimpling (skin that looks like an orange peel), puckering, redness, or thickened skin. These changes may be subtle at first but can signal underlying issues.

This includes retraction (nipple turning inward), inversion (newly inverted), or a change in appearance—say, scaling, crustiness, or discharge. Even discharge that is not bloody (clear or tinged) should be checked.

3. Swelling in the Breast, Underarm, or Collarbone

Swollen tissue or thickening in parts of the breast, or enlarged lymph nodes under the arm or near the collarbone, can precede lump detection.

4. Persistent Pain or Tenderness

While many benign conditions can cause breast pain (especially related to menstrual cycles), pain that doesn’t resolve or appears in one spot may be a red flag.
