Six NYSC Members Sue Anambra Government, Demand ₦1bn for Alleged Assault, Detention

Six members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who appeared in a viral video showing their alleged assault by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group, Agunechemba, have filed a lawsuit against the Anambra State Government, seeking ₦1 billion in damages.

The corps members, through their legal representatives, claim they were unlawfully detained, assaulted, and subjected to inhumane treatment by the vigilante operatives while serving in various parts of the state.

According to court filings, the plaintiffs are accusing the state government of failing to protect their rights as citizens and as participants in the national service scheme, describing the actions of the vigilante officers as “a gross violation of human dignity and due process.”

The case, filed before the Federal High Court in Awka, seeks not only compensation but also a public apology and a judicial declaration condemning the alleged abuses.

The incident sparked public outrage when videos showing the corps members being brutalized went viral on social media, prompting calls for justice and accountability.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Government and the Agunechemba Vigilante Group have yet to issue an official statement regarding the lawsuit.
