Sixteen inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, early Tuesday morning.

The service spokesperson Abubakar Umar, who revealed this, said the inmates escaped after attacking staff on duty, and created an illegal exit for themselves.

Umar said the escaping inmates wounded five personnel who attempted to stop them, with two in serious condition receiving treatment at a government hospital.

He said seven of the escapees had been recaptured and returned to custody, adding that the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, had visited the centre and ordered a full investigation.

“Nwakuche warned that any staff found negligent would face sanctions and confirmed that a joint search operation with other security agencies was underway to apprehend the remaining fugitives.

“The NCoS urged the public to stay calm but remain alert, and to report any suspicious activity to nearby security formations,” the statement said.
