Two of the eight women abducted by armed bandits in Tarah community, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, have regained their freedom after reportedly falling ill while in captivity.
Local sources told LeadNaija News on Wednesday that the victims were released unharmed in the early hours of today, moments after their health deteriorated.
The women were said to have been abandoned near the outskirts of the village, where residents later found them.
The development has sparked mixed reactions among community members, who expressed relief over the return of the two victims but also frustration at the “audacity and growing boldness” of armed groups terrorising rural settlements.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said villagers were “shocked, puzzled and even saddened” that sickness — not security intervention — forced the bandits to release their captives.
The remaining six women are still being held, with families anxiously awaiting updates.
The incident adds to growing concerns over persistent attacks across the Sabon Birni axis, a hotspot for banditry despite ongoing security operations in Sokoto and neighbouring states.
