The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has described soldiering as a unique calling that requires uncommon courage and a measure of what he termed “madness.”
Speaking during his screening by the Senate, he speaks on the nature of military service, General Oluyede said there is something special about being a soldier — a profession that demands bravery in the face of danger.
“There is something special about being a soldier; to be a soldier, there is some element of madness,” he said. “For a right-thinking person, when there is danger, you expect to retreat, but a soldier is expected to go forward and face that challenge.”
The CDS noted that this mindset of advancing rather than retreating defines the Nigerian Armed Forces’ spirit of sacrifice and discipline, urging officers to remain steadfast in defending the nation regardless of the risks involved.
