Human rights activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has accused operatives of the Nigeria Police Force of targeting him during an anti-demolition protest held in the Oworonsoki area of Lagos earlier today.
Sowore, in a post shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, alleged that the police units deployed to the protest scene were acting on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, whom he described as “illegal.”
According to Sowore, shortly after his arrival at the protest ground, police contingents began firing riot guns at peaceful demonstrators and later called in Rapid Response Squad (RRS) reinforcements to disperse the crowd.
The activist claimed he captured live footage of the police actions — including indiscriminate arrests and attacks on innocent bystanders — during a Facebook Live broadcast at the scene.
“It is disheartening to see law enforcement officers, who should be dedicated to fighting crime, terrorism, insurgency, and banditry, being utilized against defenseless citizens,” Sowore said.
The protest, organized by local residents and rights advocates, was reportedly aimed at halting what they described as illegal demolitions of residential properties in the Oworonsoki axis of Lagos.
