Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore, in a statement shared via his verified X handle on Friday, said the former president agreed that there was an “urgent and compelling need” to address Kanu’s case decisively and justly.
“President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. He promised to meet President Bola Tinubu to discuss the issue as soon as possible,” Sowore stated.
According to Sowore, Jonathan’s intervention adds to a growing list of prominent Nigerians — including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Femi Falana (SAN), and Senator Shehu Sani — who have publicly called for justice in Kanu’s case.
Sowore reiterated that Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention for taking up “the just cause of confronting marginalization in Nigeria.” He urged political, cultural, and religious leaders, particularly from the South East, to unite and demand his release.
“Like other ethnic and regional activists whose politically motivated cases have been withdrawn or dismissed, Nnamdi Kanu should also be released without further delay,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to peacefully mobilizing Nigerians for justice and freedom, adding the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow to his post.
