Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted sharply to the defection of Peter Obi from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as a continuation of what he termed “political homelessness.”+See more details
In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Sowore took a swipe at Obi and his supporters, accusing them of drifting from one political platform to another without clear ideology or direction.
“May political homelessness never be our portion,” Sowore wrote.
He went on to describe Obi and his political allies as “Nigeria’s most celebrated political drifters,” alleging that their exit from the Labour Party to the ADC was a predictable move.
According to Sowore, the defection represented “a logical migration, from confusion to delusion, from moral posturing to naked opportunism,” adding that despite operating under different party banners, the political actors shared similar intentions.
He further claimed there was little difference between Nigeria’s major political parties, asserting: “Different logos. Same scam.”
Sowore also suggested that Obi’s supporters would attempt to rationalise the defection, despite previously presenting themselves as ideologically distinct.
Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, recently announced his defection to the ADC, a move that has continued to generate strong reactions across Nigeria’s political space.
The Labour Party leadership has since welcomed Obi’s exit, while critics and supporters remain divided over the implications of his move ahead of the 2027 general elections.+See more details
