The 22 state attorneys general and Washington, D.C.’s attorney general filed a motion to enforce a federal judge’s block on President Donald Trump’s widespread federal funding pause, which the states sued over Jan. 28.
“The reality is that we shouldn’t have to be here. If the president followed the law, we wouldn’t have to be here,” California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a virtual press conference announcing the move.
Bonta said that the Trump administration was continuing to block disbursement of grants to states under the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, despite a judge requiring funds to keep flowing.
“The administration’s refusal to unfreeze these funds is a clear violation of the court order, which is why we’re back in court today,” Bonta said.
He said programs that have had problems accessing federal funds since the court order include the Home Electrification and Appliances Rebates Program, the Solar for All program, the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program and the national air monitoring network and research program.
Shortly after the states filed their motion Friday, U.S. District Judge John McConnell, a Rhode-Island based appointee of President Barack Obama, ordered the Justice Department to respond to the alleged violations by Sunday. Read Full News
