Western Cape Serious and Violent Crime Detectives are urgently appealing to the public for help in tracing 28-year-old Lonwabo Steven Dyasi, who has been linked to the murder of nine people and the attempted murder of another in a deadly shebeen shooting in Philippi East.
A court has issued a warrant for Dyasi’s arrest after the incident at an illegal liquor outlet in the Marikana informal settlement, Cape Town.
The attack, which took place in the early hours of 17 January 2026, saw three armed suspects enter the shebeen shortly after midnight and open fire on patrons.
Six people were killed at the scene, while others died later in hospital, bringing the confirmed death toll to nine. At least one person survived with serious injuries.
While Dyasi remains at large, police recently arrested a 19-year-old suspect in Worcester, who now faces nine counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
South African Police are asking anyone with information on Dyasi’s whereabouts to come forward.
Members of the public who can assist are urged to contact Detective Constable Sibusiso Manqindi on 072 980 2764 or call 08600 10111 (Crime Stop).
