Tension in Plateau: Troops Avert Ethnic Clash in Riyom, Soldier Caught Selling Stolen Car in Abuja

Troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) on Saturday successfully averted what could have escalated into a violent ethnic clash between Berom and Fulani youths in Plateau State, following a confrontation in Tanjol Village, Riyom Local Government Area.

Youth Clash Averted in Plateau

The disturbance began at approximately 1:00 p.m. on April 19 when suspected Berom youths attacked a Fulani settlement, shooting at herds of cattle. One cow was killed and two others injured in the assault, leading to rising tensions in the area.

In retaliation, Fulani youths from Mahanga mobilized for a reprisal attack, prompting urgent intervention from OPSH Sector 6, supported by Sector 4 and the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Gashish.

Security forces swiftly dispersed both armed groups before violence could escalate further. Two Fulani youths were reportedly injured by gunfire. The attackers are said to have fled into surrounding bushes, as OPSH launched extensive patrols in the area to restore calm and prevent renewed hostilities.

Experts Blame Government Inaction

Security analyst Zagazola Makama criticized both the Plateau State Government and political stakeholders for what he described as inaction and inciting rhetoric, which continue to fuel ethnic tensions in the region.

He called for impartial security enforcement and justice for affected communities as a path toward sustainable peace.

Army Personnel Nabbed for Car Theft in Abuja

In a separate development, a Nigerian Army officer has been arrested for allegedly stealing a car in Abuja.

Lance Corporal Yusuf Yunnusa, aged 33 and attached to the 82 Battalion in Rukuba, Plateau State, was intercepted on April 17 while attempting to sell a stolen Toyota Corolla LE at Mamu Filling Station in Lambata, Kwali Area Council of Abuja.

The ash-colored vehicle, with registration number ABC 570 FJ, had been stolen from the Federal Secretariat car park in Abuja. Acting on intelligence, police apprehended the suspect, who reportedly confessed to the crime. He remains in custody as investigations continue.

National Security Under Scrutiny

These two incidents, though unrelated, have thrown a spotlight on the fragility of peace and law enforcement in Nigeria. While Plateau continues to battle recurring ethnic violence, the Abuja car theft case raises concerns about discipline and accountability within the military.
