Tensions Rise Over Northern Identity Claims: Kwara’s Status Sparks Political Backlash

LeadNaija Reports — A fresh wave of political tension is brewing following controversial remarks concerning Kwara State’s ethnic and geopolitical identity, as debates intensify over whether Kwarans should be classified as Northerners or as part of the Yoruba-speaking Southwest.

Prominent political voices have weighed in, criticizing former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, over what they describe as an attempt to redraw the ethnic and political boundaries of Northern Nigeria for personal political gain.

“Kwara is Northern Nigeria, and this has never been in dispute under past leaders like the Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello, General Murtala Muhammed, or even your mentor, General Muhammadu Buhari, who recently distanced himself from you, el-Rufai,” one political commentator stated.

The backlash against el-Rufai intensified after reports emerged that he and his political allies allegedly compiled a list of 83 prominent positions held by Yorubas — referred to by some as “Lukumi Yorubas” — in an apparent effort to stir ethnic sentiments amid ongoing federal appointments.

Critics argue that such a move is not only misleading but also dangerous, especially considering that Northerners hold the majority of positions in the current administration — a fact previously documented but conveniently omitted by el-Rufai’s camp.

“El-Rufai should not destabilize Nigeria over political frustration. He is not the first Nigerian politician to be overlooked for a ministerial appointment,” said another source familiar with the ongoing dispute.

Accusations of ethnic favoritism have also resurfaced, with many pointing to a now-viral video where el-Rufai, during his tenure as Kaduna State Governor, allegedly stated that his government would prioritize appointments for Muslims and indigenes of Northern Kaduna.

This revelation has prompted critics to question el-Rufai’s roots and political legitimacy in Kaduna. “Without Buhari’s political backing, would you have emerged as governor?” one commentator asked pointedly.

Observers warn that divisive rhetoric could threaten national unity, particularly at a time when Nigeria is grappling with economic challenges and growing calls for restructuring.

The political landscape remains on edge, as concerned stakeholders urge el-Rufai and his supporters to desist from actions that could erode the fragile unity of the North and by extension, the entire country.

LeadNaija will continue to monitor developments on this unfolding political controversy.
