Heavily armed terrorists launched a coordinated attack on Djibo, the capital of Soum Province in Burkina Faso’s Sahel Region, early Tuesday morning, intelligence sources confirmed.
The assault, which began around 6:30 a.m., saw militants attacking the city from multiple directions. Gunfire and explosions were reported as security forces engaged the attackers. As of 9:30 a.m., the confrontation was still ongoing, and details on casualties or damages remained unclear.
In a separate incident, another terrorist attack was reported around 9:20 a.m. in Gorgadji, a town in Séno Province. The number of casualties and the extent of damage are yet to be confirmed.
Djibo, a strategic town in northern Burkina Faso, has been under siege by jihadist groups since 2022, leading to severe humanitarian challenges. Gorgadji has also suffered deadly attacks in the past, including a massacre in 2021 that claimed over 80 lives.
Security forces have been mobilized in both locations to repel the attackers and restore order. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the situation develops.
