President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded the names of two nominees for key commissioner positions within the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), as part of efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight in the power sector.
In an official communication to the Senate, the President nominated Mr. Abubakar Yusuf as Commissioner for Consumer Affairs and Dr. Fouad Olayinka Animashun as Commissioner for Finance and Management Services.
To avoid a leadership vacuum at the commission pending Senate confirmation, President Tinubu also directed Engineer Ramat to assume duties as Acting Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NERC, in accordance with statutory provisions.
“All nominations are subject to the confirmation of the Senate,” the Presidency stated.
The move comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s electricity sector, which has faced widespread public scrutiny over tariff adjustments, service delivery concerns, and ongoing reforms under the Electricity Act 2023.
Stakeholders have praised the proactive step to ensure regulatory stability and anticipate that the nominees, if confirmed, will help reposition NERC for improved consumer engagement and financial transparency.
