President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate implementation of a free healthcare program for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of senior citizens across the country.
The directive followed a briefing by Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), during which the President was updated on key challenges within the pension system.
In an official statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu emphasized that the healthcare initiative is a critical component of his government’s social protection agenda and a necessary step toward ensuring dignity in retirement.
“No retiree who has served this country should be left without access to basic healthcare or a life of dignity,” President Tinubu was quoted as saying.
In addition to the healthcare directive, the President instructed the PenCom DG to urgently resolve the long-standing police pension crisis, describing it as a priority matter requiring decisive intervention.
President Tinubu also called for the swift enactment of pension increases and the establishment of a minimum pension assurance, particularly for retirees facing the greatest vulnerability under the CPS.
These new measures are expected to provide a safety net for pensioners and align with the broader objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which places strong emphasis on equity, compassion, and inclusive governance.
The Presidency has assured that these policy shifts will be monitored closely to ensure timely and effective execution.
