Tinubu Orders Suspension of Airport Cashless Policy Over Gridlock

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to immediately suspend the implementation of the newly introduced cashless payment system at airport toll gates nationwide.

The directive follows reports of severe congestion and operational disruptions at major airports, particularly in Lagos and Abuja, where motorists and passengers reportedly experienced prolonged delays.

President Tinubu met with FAAN’s Director-General, Olubunmi Kuku, at the State House on Tuesday. The meeting took place shortly after the President ordered the immediate halt of the policy.

Dr. Kuku arrived at the Presidential Villa at about 5:45 p.m., accompanied by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.
Sources indicate that the decision to suspend the cashless system was prompted by complaints over heavy gridlock and logistical challenges linked to the rollout of the policy at airport entry and exit points.

The Presidency has yet to announce a new timeline or revised framework for the reintroduction of the payment system.
Further updates are expected as consultations continue between the Ministry of Aviation and FAAN.
