The Senator representing Bayelsa West, Senator Seriake Dickson, has declared his support for the nomination of Professor Amupitan as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking at a press briefing at the National Assembly, Senator Dickson said he would vote in favour of the confirmation when the matter comes before the Senate, describing Professor Amupitan as “eminently qualified” to lead Nigeria’s electoral body.

The former Bayelsa State governor noted that the ongoing constitutional and electoral reforms before the Senate were aimed at improving transparency, inclusiveness, and efficiency in the electoral process.

He added that the Senate is also reviewing provisions on the non-compulsory use of PVCs, timelines for elections and tribunals, and voting by inmates, which he said already has judicial backing.

According to him, other reform areas include proposals on the replacement of legislative members without by-elections, transmission of results, and internal democracy in political parties.

Senator Dickson assured that a document detailing the proposed amendments would be circulated to all relevant stakeholders for further input, adding that the Senate remains committed to ensuring credible and cost-effective elections across the country.
