Manchester United midfielder and club captain Bruno Fernandes had an excellent campaign in 2024/25.
This is despite a poor season domestically for the club.
He ended the campaign with 19 goals and 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions.
Only Amad Diallo put up stats anywhere near those of Fernandes.
The struggles at United go further back than just their most recent season, but this was by far their worst campaign of the Premier League era.
Fernandes has been the shining light and one of the very few successful signings of the past six to seven seasons.
Their midfield issues have been glossed over by Fernandes’ excellence on the pitch.
Christian Eriksen and Casemiro showed their age, whilst Mason Mount couldn’t stay fit.
Manuel Ugarte struggled with the demands of the Premier League and Kobbie Mainoo failed to live up to his impressive breakthrough of a season prior.
The club will be looking to add in midfield reinforcements in a window that has seen attacker Matheus Cunha arrive from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5 million.
They now appear to have found a cheap alternative to some of the players being linked with a move to Old Trafford, including Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace.
Manchester United told to sign £17m midfielder likened to Bruno Fernandes
According to the Manchester Evening News, United should look at German international and 1. FSV Mainz 05 midfielder Nadiem Amiri.
Amiri, 27, has a price tag of just £17 million, a bargain in today’s football landscape.
In 2024/25, Mainz secured a sixth place finish and European Football for next season, and Amiri was a big part of that.
Amiri was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season and DataMB’s player similarity generator ranked him in the top five players similar to Fernandes.
With 8 goals in 31 appearances last season for Mainz, he would offer an extra goal threat to United’s midfield.
