Troops Neutralise Six Terrorists: Nigerian and Nigerien forces have recorded another major success in the ongoing counterterrorism campaign around the Lake Chad region, neutralising six terrorists and recovering a cache of deadly weapons following a fierce confrontation near the Mallamfatori-Tumbun Gini axis.
Military sources confirmed to LeadNaija News that the coordinated offensive was carried out by troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) operating under Forward Operating Base (FOB) Kangar, supported by the Nigerien Air Force.
According to operational reports, troops immediately conducted exploitation of the battlefield, confirming the neutralisation of six terrorists while several others sustained gunshot injuries. The soldiers also recovered significant arms and ammunition during the mop-up operation.
Recovered items included five AK-47 rifles, eight AK-47 magazines, 258 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, five RPG bombs, four armed drone bombs, and five 36mm hand grenades.
Military intelligence sources disclosed that additional bodies of terrorists were seen being evacuated by their fleeing comrades, suggesting a higher casualty figure on the enemy side than initially reported.
As the insurgents attempted to retreat deeper into the Tumbuns, surveillance systems detected their movements, prompting the Nigerien Air Force to launch follow-up precision airstrikes. The air raids reportedly neutralised “additional scores” of fleeing fighters, effectively dismantling what was left of the terrorist formation in the area.
Despite the use of armed drones by the insurgents — a worrying trend that military observers describe as an “evolving terrorist tactic” — troops of FOB Kangar held their positions with superior coordination and tactical response.
Sources confirmed that some soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) sustained injuries during the initial wave of drone and mortar attacks. However, they were promptly evacuated through MNJTF air platforms for medical attention. “All the wounded personnel are in stable condition and responding to treatment,” one senior officer told LeadNaija News on condition of anonymity.

The MNJTF, which includes forces from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, has intensified clearance operations around the Lake Chad Basin, a strategic zone long exploited by terrorist factions for logistics, arms movement, and smuggling routes.
Security experts say the Lake Chad islands remain one of the most fiercely contested areas in the ongoing regional counterinsurgency campaign. Control of these waterways is critical to disrupting the Boko Haram and ISWAP supply chain that fuels terrorism across the border corridor.
According to military analysts, the latest operation highlights the renewed synergy between Nigerian and Nigerien forces under the Lake Chad Basin Commission, reflecting improved intelligence-sharing and joint air-ground coordination.
A frontline soldier who participated in the operation told LeadNaija News that the troops are determined to maintain pressure on the terrorists until the entire area is secured. “We are here to hold this ground. No retreat,” he declared shortly after the assault.
He added that recent battlefield gains were a result of improved logistics, better surveillance systems, and high morale among the troops following the steady delivery of supplies and support from the MNJTF Command.
Meanwhile, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms have been deployed to maintain aerial dominance and track any residual terrorist threats attempting to regroup or flee toward border hideouts.
Security sources say the latest success sends a strong message to insurgent groups that their operational freedom within the Lake Chad region is rapidly shrinking. “The days of unchallenged movement for terrorists in this corridor are over,” a senior MNJTF officer said.
Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency expert who has been tracking developments in the region, reported that operations are ongoing across multiple fronts to ensure full territorial control. He noted that the combined efforts of ground troops and aerial assets have significantly weakened the enemy’s command structure and disrupted supply networks.
As counterterrorism operations continue, the military remains confident that sustained pressure, improved coordination, and multinational cooperation will eventually eliminate the remnants of terrorist cells operating in the Lake Chad Basin.
