Rubio, in an interview with journalist Catherine Herridge on X, reaffirmed the U.S. government’s commitment to foreign aid but defended the review of USAID’s operations.
“I’m not against foreign aid. I’ve supported foreign aid. We’re going to do foreign aid. No one here is saying we’re going to have zero, and some [programs] have already survived,” he stated.
The freeze on USAID-funded initiatives comes amid a broader overhaul of the agency under the administration of President Donald Trump. Rubio suggested that some of the scrutinized programs “shouldn’t have ever existed.”
Meanwhile, Elon Musk, who heads the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has criticized USAID, calling it a “criminal organization” that “needs to die.”
Following the freeze, USAID employees worldwide were placed on administrative leave, and the agency’s website, including past financial reports, was taken offline.
